Environmental injustice among Hispanics in Santa Clara, California: a human–environment heat vulnerability assessment

Abstract In the United States, there is a growing interest in understanding heat stress lower-income and racially isolated neighborhoods. This study spatially identifies heat-vulnerable neighborhoods, evaluates relationship between race/ethnicity temperature exposure, emphasizes differences among Hispanics by origin to capture environmental injustices Santa Clara County (SCC), CA. The current methodology uses Landsat 8 via Google Earth Engine measure Land Surface Temperature (LST) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) assess physical environment. human environment evaluated using Modified Darden-Kamel Composite Socioeconomic determine spatial variability of socioeconomic status (SES) Dissimilarity level segregation non-Hispanic Whites Hispanics/Latinos. combination these assessments comprises comprehensive human–environment approach for health exposure evaluation which define injustice. Results reveal inequalities an uneven residential distribution Whites. Low NDVI high LST values were found Mexican implying possible racism. Almost half population lives highly segregated neighborhoods with low very SES, mainly located East San Jose, where, historically, they have been ghettoized. Mexicans, general, could be at higher risk mortality during waves. Future work should examine additional variables (e.g., housing characteristics, crime, social cohesion, collective behaviors) comprehensively evaluate at-risk population.
